STA Swimming Awards

We recognise that those who learn to swim as adults need different teaching techniques.

The Adult Swimmer Series comprises four awards covering the basics up to and including, competent water skills.

Those who complete the whole series can progress to Advanced Swimmer Series or Water Safety Skills Series.

At Level 5 pupils have the choice of two ladders taking them towards a Gold Award or they may join a specialist swimming club.

Alternatively, they may wish to progress up both ladders at the same time. The two ladders are:

The Advanced Swimmer Series consisting of three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold; each award has a badge and certificate. This series develops swimming technique, speed, stamina and other water skills.

The Water Safety Skills Series also comprising three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold; with badges and certificates. This series develops survival and rescue skills.

The Distance Series complements the complete learn to swim programme, and help to develop stamina and fitness.
The series ranges from 5 metres to 5,000 metres.

This series is designed for those who start to learn to swim at primary school, i.e. the rising 5's to 8 years old group.
Pupils progress through four levels - Octopus, Goldfish, Angelfish and Shark. Within each of these levels there are three awards.

On completion of Level 4, pupils will be able to:
Swim 100 metres
Perform all four strokes
Perform a dive from the poolside
Have an understanding of their own ability and basic water safety.

In response to many requests from users of the ISWSS the STA have reintroduced the Personal Survival Series as the Seal Series.

This series incorporates many of the skills in the Water Safety Skills Series but geared towards personal skills rather than rescuing others.

Pupils who gain both the Gold Swimmer and the Gold Water Skills and undertake Level 8 Swimming and Water Safety Skills will be awarded the ultimate STA award, the STA Platinum Award.
